About CFY

Keeping Kids in the Game.

Our Story

Clearwater For Youth began in 1966 as a Football and Cheerleading program sponsored by the Police Athletic League (P.A.L.). The Suncoast Kiwanis picked up the ball in 1967 and in 1972, CFY was incorporated as a not for profit, tax-deductible 501 c 3 organization.

From inception, we had two main goals: to build a recreational center for youth and to support youth organizations and participants wherever a need existed. Through the tireless effort of CFY founder Fred Fisher, the Harris E. “Zip” Long Center in Clearwater opened in July of 1990. Presently, through a unique arrangement with The Long Center Foundation and the City of Clearwater, The Long Center continues to bustle with activity throughout the year.

What We Do

Our organization proudly supports all City of Clearwater co-sponsored youth sports programs and many other independent organizations, reaching over 8,000 youth. Boys and girls playing football, baseball, softball, basketball, soccer, lacrosse, track and field, cheerleading, swimming, volleyball, golf, surfing, sailing, and more. To provide these children the opportunity to play, each year we fund hundreds of participant registration scholarships, program grants for uniforms and equipment, regional/national travel assistance, underwrite fees, and supplement capital improvements.

Since 2008, CFY has also facilitated the distribution of over $500,000 in college scholarships through the Richard O. Jacobson Scholarship Program. In 2020, this program awarded 18 deserving students over $105,000 in funding and saw its recipients advance to institutions around the country, including Princeton and Harvard.
